"...Here is how I see the Pits' history. Scavengers establish a temporary camp in that cargo hold, a central place to rest and trade. The camp grows, attracts more people, more scavengers as well as those who'd serve them: cooks, whores, gamblers, etc. Soon you have a large camp and the first order is established in that pure lawless chaos: the saloon - a central place providing drinking, food, whores, rooms, other services..."
